Winter is Here

This is what a retired teacher does when he no longer has a classroom full of students.

About This Site...

I originally set up this website for my students when I taught biology, chemistry, and philosophy at the Reseda Science Magnet, a public high school in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County. Good times, great colleagues, and many awesome students.  But now that I’m retired I no longer have students so there’s not much need for the biology and chemistry materials that were on my website so they are now gone.  I kept my old philosophy lecture notes on the site because—well, everyone should know philosophy especially those ideas that form the foundation for Western Civilization and unfortunately few do.  So the website now contains subjects that interest me the most now: Theology, Philosophy (which I’ve already mentioned) and "Winter is Coming."  What is that about? No, its not about "white walkers," or dragons. "Winter is coming" is about the fact that a good many people have a feeling or an intuition that "something is just not right with the world," but they just can't put a finger on it. We're going to take a look at that--when I get around to it, sooner than later I hope. And there may be other topics that pop up on my website, hence the blank spaces that may someday include links to topics that interest me, and I hope you.

About Me...

kdm

I was born and raised in North Hollywood in the San Fernando Valley in Southern California. I was educated in the "Valley" and received my bachelor's degree in Chemistry and Biology from Cal State University, Northridge. I then did graduate work (masters) in Nutritional Science at the University of California at Davis. While there, I received a phone call from a nurse (she worked for a doctor friend of mine) and she conveyed a question the doctor had regarding gastric emptying rate. I enjoyed the conversation we had so I suggested that we should meet and discuss the gastric issue further (yes, my suggestion had an ulterior motive). I drove down to Bakersfield, we discussed GER, and a year later we were married. Shortly thereafter we moved back to the San Fernando Valley where my family lived, I changed careers from Nutritional Consulting to Public School teacher, and we had our first child, Megan. My first teaching position was at Stevenson Junior High in East Los Angeles. After that I did a short stint at a private school and during that time Jan and I had our second daughter, Breanna. I returned to public education and taught the next twenty years in the Science Magnet at Reseda High School; during this time I earned another masters degree, this time in Science Education. My wife and I are retired and now live in a lovely mountain community in the Sierra Nevada not far from Yosemite.

My faith, Christianity, has always been central in my life. It defines who I am, and gives the underlying context to all that I do, the relationships that I have, and my hopes for the future. I have not always done Christianity well, but His goodness and grace keeps me confident that the good work He began in me will be completed in this life and in the one to come.

In addition to my religious musings you'll also find quite a bit of stuff about philosophy on my website. This is the result of a mid-life existential crisis (actually more of an epistemological crisis) I had in my 40's. As far as mid-life crises go, it was a pretty mild one since Plato and Descartes was a far better alternative than the fast women and fast cars of more traditional mid-life crises.

You're going to find some other things on my website. It is a work in progress.
